Egg quality and early foetal development are both influenced by nutritional status built up over the preceding weeks and months, not just what’s eaten after a positive pregnancy test.
This is why most guidelines recommend starting preconception nutrition changes at least one to three months ahead of actively trying to conceive where possible, though of course pregnancies happen on their own timeline too, and it’s never "too late" to start improving nutrition once you know.
Weight, body composition and fertility
Both very low and very high body weight can affect ovulation regularity and fertility outcomes, largely through effects on hormone production and signalling.
This isn’t a reason for weight-focused anxiety. It’s simply part of the broader picture connecting energy balance and reproductive hormone function.
For people with irregular cycles alongside weight changes, working with a healthcare provider to understand the underlying cause (which might include PCOS, thyroid function, or other factors) is more useful than pursuing weight change as a fertility strategy in isolation.
Omega-3s and egg quality
Some research links higher omega-3 intake with improved egg quality and slightly better fertility outcomes, potentially through anti-inflammatory and cell-membrane effects on developing eggs.
The evidence is promising but not yet definitive enough to be a universal, strongly-worded recommendation. It’s reasonable to include oily fish or a quality omega-3 supplement as part of an overall preconception diet rather than treating it as a guaranteed fertility booster on its own.
Caffeine, alcohol and fertility: what the data shows
Most guidelines suggest moderating caffeine to around 200mg per day (roughly one to two cups of coffee) during preconception and pregnancy, based on associations between higher intake and modestly increased risk of certain complications.
Alcohol guidance during preconception is generally more cautious, with many guidelines recommending reducing or avoiding it once actively trying to conceive, since safe thresholds during early pregnancy (often before it’s confirmed) aren’t well established.
Supplements beyond the prenatal basics
Vitamin D deficiency is common and increasingly discussed in fertility research, given vitamin D receptors are present in reproductive tissue; testing levels ahead of conception is a reasonable, low-cost step.
Coenzyme Q10 and inositol are sometimes discussed for fertility support, particularly for people with PCOS or diminished ovarian reserve, though evidence quality varies and these are best discussed with a fertility specialist rather than self-prescribed.
When nutrition isn’t the missing piece
It’s worth naming clearly: many causes of difficulty conceiving (tubal issues, sperm factors, ovulation disorders, age-related decline in egg quantity) are not things nutrition can meaningfully change.
If conception hasn’t happened after twelve months of trying (or six months for those over 35), most guidelines recommend a fertility evaluation rather than continuing to adjust diet alone. Nutrition is worth getting right precisely because it’s one of the few levers within your control, not because it’s the most powerful one.

A reasonable day might look like:
- fortified cereal or eggs with spinach for breakfast (folate and iron)
- a lentil and leafy green salad with citrus dressing for lunch (folate, iron, vitamin C for absorption)
- a handful of walnuts as a snack (omega-3s)
- salmon with quinoa and broccoli for dinner (choline, omega-3s, fibre), plus a prenatal vitamin to cover any gaps.
